When Ron was handed five consecutive 99-year sentences for burglary, he was blindsided. It was the 1990s, and Texas was trying to tamp down crime with severe sentences. Ron felt hopeless. He was 19 years old and believed he would die in prison. It wasn’t a future to look forward to.
As years passed, he became more violent. People called him “the Rhino” for his rage and physical strength. He spent 13 years in solitary confinement.
One night, it all changed. Ron heard God calling to him and he began to pour himself into scripture. He committed his life to God and promised to serve him as he lived out his days in prison.
Turns out God had another miracle in store for Ron: parole.
After almost 20 years in prison, Ron was released. He got married, and together he and his wife founded an organization that helps women affected by crime, addiction, and incarceration.
Ron also met the judge who sentenced him. When the judge asked if he had lingering animosity, Ron said he was a new creation, and the past was the past.
(You can hear Ron share his story on Episode 49 of the Compelled podcast.)
Ron’s turnaround is a miracle. God transformed a man of violence and hatred into a faithful servant. He called Ron to become a peacemaker, and Ron listened. This obedience is what now defines him.
In Chapter 3 of his epistle, James writes, “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.” These words reveal God’s heart for us: He wants us to be peacemakers. Thanks to his redemptive mercy, it’s possible.
It’s inspiring to hear Ron’s unique story of transformation. Yet there’s something within it that’s true for everyone: God wants us to “sow in peace.”
Thank you to everyone who supports M2W2 by volunteering, donating, and praying. This month let’s continue to help repair the ties of community, family, and friendship. And as we do this, let’s remember that we are doing God’s work. We are sowing in peace.
