A few years ago, I was driving on the Port Mann Bridge. It was 5:30 pm on a Wednesday and all lanes were clogged. Stop and go, we crossed the bridge and climbed the hill into Surrey. Traffic picked up—but for only a moment. The car in front of me came to a halt. I stopped. Someone two vehicles back didn’t. My car was totalled. Thankfully I was okay. Shaken but okay.
The next morning, I felt good. Even though the collision occurred at a low speed, I knew I could’ve been hurt. After all, my car was toast! I knew God’s hand was upon me, for whatever reason. I gave thanks to God for protecting me. When I tell this story, I credit God for keeping me safe. (I also credit my mother-in-law for driving me home after the accident.)
As I read through this month’s prayer calendar, I’m inspired by the opportunity to support each other through prayer. No matter where we are, we can ask God to comfort and protect others as only he can. Moreover, praying for others can remind us of times when God has shown us compassion. It’s another chance to praise him.
Our organization exists to help people overcome the effects of incarceration. Part of that is offering spiritual support when asked. But so often in life, the physical is linked to the spiritual. By meeting practical needs — listening and being a companion, helping people access healthcare, or even providing food and clothing — we walk with people as they rebuild their lives and shed the stigma of incarceration. When this happens, it’s a reason to give thanks.
Join us this month as we pray for each other and our communities, and celebrate the ways that God renews lives.
Only in community can the incarcerated recover.
